Breaking the Surface: An Introduction to the Resources Sector
Continuous learning in 2026! Month #2
Last week I knocked over AusIMM's online course Breaking the Surface: An Introduction to the Resources Sector. Though I'm far from "new to industry" I've set myself a goal to complete one structured CPD training/course each month, and I'm on a (rock and) roll.
While I have quite a broad understanding of the industry already, the Forming and Finding Deposits module was most valuable, being an area I don't (yet) have first-hand experience in. It provided a really solid overview of geological structures, how mineral deposits are formed, and exploration techniques like magnetic surveys, electrical methods, and remote sensing.
You knew it was coming, and yes - of course I'm going to recommend this course! It's a great introduction for new to industry, covering the entire pit to port process, and helping to understand how your role fits into the mining ecosystem.
